NEWS CLIPS

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

I published more than 70 state politics, education and government accountability stories as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Capitol Bureau Intern from June to August 2023 and Student Misinformation Fellow from September to December 2023. My work included multiple investigations, exclusive scoops and narratives that brought politics to life. These are my favorite clips.

I interviewed the Republican Party of Wisconsin chair and youth organizers on college campuses from both the Democratic and Republican parties to examine how the Wisconsin GOP planned to court a growing and powerful bloc of youth voters in what could be a tipping point state in the 2024 presidential election — and why the party's own members could jeopardize that effort.

My investigation uncovered the truth about a state law Wisconsin Republicans hailed as a ban on DEI initiatives in local governments. I contacted over a dozen local officials and combed existing state and federal law to discover the law had no effect.

Wisconsin has some of the strictest expungement laws in the nation, meaning those convicted of low-level, nonviolent crimes often struggle to find stable housing or employment. A bipartisan bill that would expand expungement eligibility, but it has a tough road to becoming law.

Randy Koschnick, former director of state courts, filed a now-rejected ethics complaint against the Wisconsin Supreme Court's new liberal majority over legal concerns about the judge hired to replace him after the liberal justices fired him. I served as print press pooler for the White House Correspondents Association and rode in the motorcade when Vice President Kamala Harris made multiple stops in Wisconsin to tout Biden administration broadband efforts.

My exclusive scoop for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel revealed that a bill presented as a bipartisan solution to Wisconsin's stagnating third-grade reading scores was in actuality quite divisive. My reporting sparked renewed negotiations between Republican lawmakers and the Evers administration that eventually got a phonics-based literacy bill over the finish line.

Following weeks of demands from Republican lawmakers that the University of Wisconsin System cut diversity programs to ward off a $32 million budget cut, Kelly and I interviewed UW students to hear their perspectives on the programs and GOP attacks.

As a misinformation fellow for the Journal Sentinel, I pursued opportunities for original reporting, even if it meant driving two hours on a weeknight. Here, I traveled with a former state senator dedicated to dispelling election lies while some of her fellow Republicans spread them. This article encapsulates her mission and worries from election workers that a nightmare scenario could play out in 2024 without change.

Following a report that Gov. Tony Evers used an alias email address for public business, I investigated how other governors used alias emails. I found the practice, while not always condoned, was a common email management tactic used by Wisconsin governors.
